England star Manu Tuilagi finds new club after refusing pay cut at Leicester Tigers

England centre Manu Tuilagi has joined Sale Sharks following his high-profile departure from Leicester Tigers.

The 43 caps international left Leicester earlier this month after failing to agree terms on a pay cut.

He had been linked with a move to France, but his switch to Sale on a deal until 2021 ensures he will remain available for England - while his chances of selection for the British and Irish Lions will be boosted by the deal.

"Manu will be a fantastic commercial and playing addition to our squad," said Sale boss Steve Diamond.

"We contacted Manu's agent and Leicester Tigers last week to discuss the player's current position.

"After discussions on Friday, all parties - Leicester Tigers, Manu Tuilagi and Sale Sharks - agreed that the player was a free agent and was able to enter into negotiations with another club."

"Manu will be a fantastic commercial and playing addition to our squad and I am looking forward to seeing him join up with the lads at Carrington this week.”

Tuilagi's existing Leicester deal still had a year left to run, however his career at the Tigers came to an acrimonious end when he was among five players released after refusing to sign an amended contract on reduced terms - despite the association between his family and the club going back two decades.

Sharks are currently second in the Premiership table - with Tuilagi's signing a hefty boost to their title hopes when rugby resumes in mid-August.
