England star admits brawl got Saracens 'revved' to beat Munster as inquiry opens

Mako Vunipola says Munster’s manic medic did Saracens a favour by provoking the brawl which sparked their potentially season-defining win.

European rugby chiefs yesterday launched an investigation into the incident which led to a 30-man free-for-all which spilt off the pitch.

Formal letters will be sent to both clubs to establish the facts before Champions Cup organisers rule on whether a misconduct charge is called for.

The Londoners accused Munster’s head of medical Jamie Kearns of directing a “horrible” remark towards England star Jamie George.

They claimed “something derogatory” was said about George’s weight but suggested the real upset was caused by a further comment made about a member of his family.

England prop Vunipola was part of a Sarries team drifting fairly aimlessly towards home defeat and European elimination when it all kicked off at Allianz Park.

The tear-up snapped them out of their torpor and the champions scored two late tries to not only triumph but deny Munster a losing bonus point.

“As players we don’t want something to have to happen like that to rev us up,” said Vunipola. “But it did and we are just very thankful we got the result in the end.

“You want a reaction after something like that. It is unfortunate it happened like that but we just had to back it up afterwards.”

Vunipola himself scored the all-important second try after younger brother Billy, immense throughout, made the first by occupying four defenders and slipping Sean Maitland the scoring pass.

“It was unbelievable being in the mix there,” added Mako. “It was physical but we spoke during the week about how you have to stick in the fight.”

Saracens remain third in Pool 4 with two rounds to play, behind leaders Racing 92 and Munster.

But victory lifted a club hamstrung by competing domestic demands - due to a 35-point Premiership points deduction for salary cap breaches - to within one point of the Irish giants with a more favourable run-in.

While Munster face an arduous task in Paris against unbeaten Racing before finishing at home to pool whipping boys Ospreys, Saracens will be expected to defeat both the Welsh side in Swansea and Racing in north London.

“If we play rugby like we did in the last 25 minutes we are going to be tough to beat,” McCall acknowledged. “We’ve shown ourselves what we’re capable of.”

Saracens will require extraordinary strength in depth to advance in Europe whilst making up a 22-point deficit in just 17 games at the foot of the Premiership.

But the way the club has coped with home and away games against Munster gives them belief.

Only Ben Earl, Nick Isiekwe and Alex Lozowski started both games yet Sarries outscored the two-time champions 18-16 and they alone took points from each contest.

“For us as players, all the stuff that's happened is done now,” said Vunipola, referring to the club’s salary cap punishment. "We have just got to deal with what comes up next and that's the rugby. If anything that frees you up a bit.”
