England squad is rallying around Jofra Archer, says Chris Silverwood

Chris Silverwood says England will rally around Jofra Archer as he continues his self-isolation after breaching lockdown protocols when popping home on the journey from Southampton to Manchester on Monday.

On Saturday, Archer is set to undergo the first of the two Covid-19 tests he must pass before being able to return to the group. The unidentified individual Archer came into contact with has tested negative for the coronavirus.

The fast bowler must spend five days alone in his room, but is able to watch the cricket from his balcony, which overlooks the outfield.

A number of his team-mates and staff were in contact with Archer after play last night, and the medical staff are speaking to him hourly.

England’s management are likely to wait until the Test is over to reveal whether Archer faces further sanction, but — test results pending — he is expected to be available for the final match of the series a week today.

“There was disappointment but, ultimately, it’s an error of judgment and we will support him however we can,” Silverwood told the BBC. “He’s still a very important member of our team.”
