England squad announcement live: Thomas Tuchel explains Bellingham and Foden roles after recalls

Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden have returned to the England squad as Thomas Tuchel handed a first senior call-up to Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott.

The Euro 2024 runners-up are stepping up preparations for next summer's World Cup having secured qualification with two matches to spare.

England round off Group K with next Thursday's Wembley encounter against Serbia and a trip to Albania three days later, with Tuchel selecting a 25-man squad for November's camp.

Bellingham is back involved after the coach boldly overlooked the midfielder for last month's meet-up due to a lack of rhythm and a desire to keep faith with those that impressed in September.

It led Tuchel to face questions over their relationship and the personality of a player he apologised to for saying in a June interview that his mother finds some of his on-field antics "repulsive".

The pair will work together for the first time since then, while Manchester City's Phil Foden is back involved for the first time since the German coach's first camp in March.

Bournemouth midfielder Scott was the most eye-catching inclusion. Part of the England's triumphant Under-21 European Championship side, the 22-year-old has received his maiden call-up.

Nico O'Reilly and Jarell Quansah are the other uncapped players involved, while there are recalls for Adam Wharton and Nick Pope.

Morgan Gibbs-White, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and Ollie Watkins have dropped out.

Mary Earps reveals how she feels about Sarina Wiegman after Hannah Hampton fallout

12:35 , Mike Jones

England goalkeeper Mary Earps says she still holds "tremendous respect" for head coach Sarina Wiegman, despite their relationship breakdown over Wiegman’s preference for goalkeeping rival Hannah Hampton.

Earps strongly criticised Wiegman’s decision to restore Hampton to the squad prior to this year’s European Championship in her autobiography, which was published earlier this week.

Tuchel on Gordon injury doubts

12:18 , Mike Jones

The England boss explained: "He gives intensity, hunger and physical input that is very rare to find and helps us a lot to build a team identity that we need. He puts the effort in and he is relentless.

"We are aware he has been subbed twice for minor issues. We are in close contact with the Newcastle medical staff on a very trustful and professional level.

"We decided to call him up and my last information is that we have a chance he will come to the camp and we will take care of him.

"We will not take any unnecessary risk. Players' health is always first."

Until May anything can happen

12:12 , Mike Jones

Thomas Tuchel also explained how he will approach the England camp in March next year.

He said: “I think it's important for me to reconnect after these three camps with all 55-60 players on the long list and be in close contact and see them, meet them and text them. This will be my job to do and then we will have the phase in March which could be even busier for some of our players and their clubs.

"We have to stay open-minded because young players can come through - those who are struggling for minutes can play important roles for their clubs. I need to make sure the door is always open and they are on their toes and they have a chance to be with us.

"The final nomination is only in May and until then, anything can happen."

Tuchel on World Cup selection

12:05 , Mike Jones

"I have a settled mind but I will also be open because I know anything can happen,” replied the England coach when ased if he knew who would be in his World Cup squad.

“You don't wish for injuries but it can happen in short notice.

"My thoughts now is more for the camps for September, October and November.

“But my thoughts for the World Cup will then start after this camp and the qualification phase is over.

“This was an important cycle for me and this is the third part of the cycle, so it's not finished. This is where all the attention goes now.”

Will Tuchel remain on after the World Cup

12:00 , Mike Jones

Thomas Tuchel signed on as England boss for a short contract which takes him until the end of the World Cup next year.

Is he thinking about staying on after that?

"Yeah, there is [thought about longevity]. It's a lot of fun since we are on track in the last two camps. But it was from the start. But there's nothing to announce at the moment.

"I am very happy with the way things are going and I think the federation is quite happy with the way things are. But that's just today.

"I have to prove myself again from Monday with the team and the rest will take care of itself. The most important thing is to stay focused for the next camp.

"I am in a good place mentally because I love the team, the support from the federation and the direction where it is heading. That's the main focus.

"Haven’t thought so much about my contract, but we have time for that."

Does Kane need a break?

11:52 , Mike Jones

"Yeah, but not in November,” said Tuchel when asked if his captain would need a break before the World Cup.

“Given the fact that he has a break in winter. He's in a nice position to play in Germany and suits him to have the break given where he is in his career.

“That's why he has no excuses for the next two matches."

England have back ups for Kane

11:44 , Mike Jones

With Harry Kane being the only recognised striker in the England squad how will the Three Lions cope if he doesn’t play?

"We don't have a clear number nine profile behind Harry [Kane] but given different scenarios, Anthony Gordon plays there for Newcastle,” Thomas Tuchel revealed.

“Marcus Rashford plays there for Barcelona. Phil Foden can also play a very fluid number nine in this camp.

“We have enough options to be dangerous. Jude shows up regularly in number nine positions.

“I am confident we will be able to create chances and convert them."

Tuchel provides reason behind leaving Watkins out

11:39 , Mike Jones

The England coach said: "No one needs to be nervous [about lack of number nines], we have a lot of good strikers, Ollie is one of them.

“We understood and observe when we watched Ollie that he's playing through discomfort at the moment and it simply didn't make much sense to bring him into this camp in this condition.

"We then opted for the option to give him this break to get treatment and get back to full physical capacity and best shape to fit for the place again in March.”

Mikel Arteta responds to Thomas Tuchel dropping Myles Lewis-Skelly for latest England squad

11:35 , Flo Clifford

Mikel Arteta has offered his take on Myles Lewis-Skelly being dropped from Thomas Tuchel’s latest England squad.

The 25-man squad for November’s fixtures against Serbia and Albania was released on Thursday, with the Arsenal left-back left out having featured in October’s camp.

Gunners teammates Eberechi Eze, Declan Rice, and Bukayo Saka are all in Tuchel’s latest group, while Morgan Gibbs-White, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, James Trafford and Ollie Watkins are the other names dropped.

Tuchel breaks down Bellingham's potential role

11:31 , Mike Jones

Jude Bellingham is back in the England set up after missing out in September.

Thomas Tuchel says that the challenge is to now make sure Bellingham plays in his best role in the team.

"Jude accepted the decision in the last camp. He did what he does best, competed at the highest level and shows he deserves to be in the squad and that's why he is here,” Tuchel said.

"I will not reveal my private conversations with the players in public. I think it's not a surprise for him to compete for us in the number 10 position. He knows from me and he sees himself as a number 10.

"The key strength of him from number 10 is to find number 9 positions. He has a hunger and determination to score, which is what we see for Real Madrid and hopefully, we see that for us as well."

Tuchel on Lewis-Skelly's omission

11:27 , Mike Jones

The England boss said: "Myles was a very good teammate and played for us in the last camp in the World Cup qualifier in Riga, so was Ruben Loftus-Cheek, so was Morgan Gibbs-White and James Trafford.

"But I said last time there is a component to it that it's about competition and performance and the door is always open for guys who perform on a regular and high level.

"Myles, Ruben and Morgan got out-performed by Nico O'Reilly, Alex Scott, Nick Pope and Jude in their positions.

"Myles simply needs more starts, more minutes. Now came a time when Nico O'Reilly had so many starts in that position, so he is slightly ahead for this camp."

Watkins excluded with niggle

11:23 , Mike Jones

Thomas Tuchel also explained why Ollie Watkins was dropped from the squad.

The Aston Villa has been playing with an injury niggle and Tuchel decided to give him the international break to rest and recover.

As such he will remain with Villa throughout the break with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Gordon ready to play in the striker roles.

Scott deserves call up

11:19 , Mike Jones

“Alex deserves to be with us. I first closely saw him in the Euros with the under-21s when he was excellent together with Elliot Anderson,” said Tuchel.

“Since then he has really satepped up and is a regular starter for Bournemouth, who are overperforming constantly in the league.

“He has come a long way. He will come as a No.8 and hopefully he can show his talent and personality.”

Scott’s inclusion could be a bit of long term planning from the England boss who has been keen to select successful players from the U21s.

Tuchel explains Wharton's call-up

11:14 , Mike Jones

Thomas Tuchel spoke about bringing Adam Wharton and Alex Scott into the squad.

He said: “Two different positions, two different profiles.

“It’s the third time we’ve tried to call Adam up – I hope he stays fit. Elliot [Anderson] has done very well for us.

“He is playing through pain at the moment – nothing major – so we are aware of that and we added Adam to the squad.

“We need to learn about him and prepare ourselves if Elliot is not able to play both 90 minutes.

“Don’t forget Jordan Henderson please because we have both options.”

Bellingham's ability to score is unusual

11:11 , Mike Jones

A bit more of Tuchel’s explanation on where he wants Bellingham to play.

The head coach explained: "He has the ability arrive and score goals that a number nine would score, which is very unusual.

“It might seem like easy goals, but to arrive in these positions is one of his outstanding qualities.

“We will try to find space for him in the number 10 position to arrive and score these goals."

Foden is a mix of a nine or a ten

11:07 , Mike Jones

On Foden, Tuchel added: “I think Phil, where he made lately against Dortmund, I see him at his strongest.

“Close to the opponents box. Where he scored against Dortmund near the 18-yard box.

“I think it’s important to see him in the centre of the pitch, I don’t see him as a winger. He will play as a nine-and-a-half, ten-and-a-half.”

Tuchel on recalling Foden and Bellingham

11:04 , Mike Jones

“We are delighted that they are back. I think the contribution of both of the them for their clubs lately was immense.

“They play regularly and are a big part of the success of Real and Man City’s matches. They score decisive goals.

“We’re delighted that they’re in shape and in form and are back with us.

“Jude comes back as a No. 10. I think that’s his best position and one of his key strengths is to score. He has the ability to arrive and score goals that a No.9 would score.”

Thomas Tuchel press conference live

11:01 , Mike Jones

Thomas Tuchel is here now and is ready to chat to the media.

Let’s see what he has to say...

England have qualified for the World Cup

10:54 , Mike Jones

England have already secured their place in the 2026 World Cup finals thanks to a 5-0 victory in Latvia in their last outing.

Two qualifiers remaining and they will now be hoping to maintain their winning record in Group K.

The England players, meanwhile, are hoping to cement their place in Thomas Tuchel's plans for the summer.

Tuchel to address the media

10:48 , Mike Jones

Thomas Tuchel will speak to the media at 11am and discuss his selections for November’s squad.

Expect that press conference to be revealing about the German’s thoughts for England going forward.

Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden recalled to England squad

10:42 , Mike Jones

Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden have returned to the England squad as Thomas Tuchel handed a first senior call-up to Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott.

The Euro 2024 runners-up are stepping up preparations for next summer’s World Cup having secured qualification with two matches to spare.

Which midfielders make the World Cup squad

10:36 , Mike Jones

Thomas Tuchel’s England selections point to the England manager still determining his World Cup squad.

As part of that he will need to choose who partners Declan Rice in the middle of the pitch.

These next two matches will give him a look at Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton and Alex Scott. Which of them will make it to the World Cup next year?

Big name omissions

10:32 , Mike Jones

A lot of talk about this camp is that those players who haven’t been selected will find it difficult to earn a place in the World Cup squad.

That might be bad news for the big names of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jack Grealish.

Neither has been selected by Tuchel and there will be just one camp left before the World Cup squad is selected.

Changes to the squad

10:27 , Mike Jones

Five players who featured in the September squad for England have been dropped.

Those are:

James Trafford in goal.

Myles Lewis-Skelly in defence.

Morgan Gibbs-White and Ruben Loftus-Cheek in midfield.

Ollie Watkins up front.

Replacing them in the squad are six players including a couple of suprises.

Nick Pope returns as the third goalkeeper.

Reece James rejoins the defence.

Alex Scott earns a first senior call up and Adam Wharton returns to the national team for the first time under Tuchel. Jude Bellingham is also back.

Phil Foden’s form has earned him a recall as well.

England squad in full

10:23 , Mike Jones

Goalkeepers:

Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Nick Pope (Newcastle United)

Defenders:

Dan Burn (Newcastle United), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Reece James (Chelsea), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Nico O'Reilly (Manchester City), Jarell Quansah (Bayer Leverkusen), Djed Spence (Tottenham Hotspur), John Stones (Manchester City)

Midfielders:

Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest), Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Jordan Henderson (Brentford), Declan Rice (Arsenal), Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa), Alex Scott (AFC Bournemouth), Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace)

Forwards:

Jarrod Bowen (West Ham United), Eberechi Eze (Arsenal), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle United), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Marcus Rashford (Barcelona, loan from Manchester United), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal)

Doubts over Gordon

10:19 , Mike Jones

Anthony Gordon has picked up an injury niggle on his hip while playing with Newcastle.

He has been subbed off in the first half of Newcastle’s last two matches and will be having a scan on the issue ahead of the weekend.

Newcastle manager, Eddie Howe, wasn’t optimistic about Gordon’s chances of playing against Brentford this Sunday which raises doubts on whether he can feature for England next week too.

(AFP via Getty Images)

Lewis-Skelly dropped

10:15 , Mike Jones

Myles Lewis-Skelly has been dropped from this squad for the next two World Cup qualifiers.

His playing time at Arsenal hasn’t been enough to guarantee a place in the England camp and instead Thomas Tuchel has called up Reece James.

Tuchel is a huge fan of James, who he worked closely with at Chelsea, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Chelsea captain make the right-back option his own over the next four games.

(Action Images via Reuters)

No Watkins or Welbeck

10:08 , Mike Jones

In the forward positions Ollie Watkins has been dropped with Phil Foden the man replacing him.

Watkins was seen as Harry Kane’s replacement should the England captain not be fit to play (he’s fine for this camp).

However, Tuchel dropping him may be a sign that Watkins isn’t guaranteed a place at the World Cup.

In less surprising news, Danny Welbeck’s form for Brighton isn’t enough to force a recall.

It’s been seven years since Welbeck last played for England and at 34 years old he may be too old to feature in Tuchel’s plans.

Bournemouth's Alex Scott called up

10:05 , Mike Jones

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the squad is the inclusion of Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott.

Scott has been excelling for the Cherries this season who currently sit fifth in the Premier League table.

Scott has one goal and one assist in the top flight but his performances have been a stabling presence for Bournemouth.

Bellingham and Foden included

10:01 , Mike Jones

Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden are both included in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the next two World Cup qualifiers.

Their inclusions were rumoured and, possibly, expected but there are other surprises in this selection...

England squad for November internationals

10:00 , Mike Jones

Here is the England squad in full:

Who will make the England squad?

09:56 , Mike Jones

Thomas Tuchel’s squad selections should be dropping in a few minutes time (at 10am).

We’ll then dissect the picks and compare them with the previous squad from September.

The England boss is then scheduled to hold a press conference at 11am explaining his selections.

Who's at risk?

09:50 , Mike Jones

Should there be recalls for the likes of Bellingham and Foden that would mean some members of the previous squad will drop out.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek was restored to the national team for the last camp but is one of the players who could drop out this time around.

Thomas Tuchel’s selections may point to who he is thinking about taking to the World Cup.

England vs Serbia

09:44 , Mike Jones

The Three Lions will play two matches during November’s international break with the first being against Serbia on Tuesday 13.

England have come up against Serbia on two previous occasions, running out 5-0 winners earlier this year in September, while the only other encounter came at last year's Euro 2024 in Germany.

Jude Bellingham scored a first half header as the Three Lions took three points in Group C.

A surprise recall for Welbeck?

09:39 , Mike Jones

Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler said he was sure the “other German” Thomas Tuchel will make the right call over whether to hand Danny Welbeck an England recall.

34-year-old Welbeck has now scored six times in the Premier League this season and is the highest ranked Englishman in the goalscoring charts.

“Again it’s not my decision. I’m happy he’s in my team,” said Herzeler when asked if Welbeck should be called up,.

“I’m sure the other German will make the right decision.”

Gareth Southgate had become divisive among England fanbase

09:33 , Mike Jones

Former England manager Sir Gareth Southgate felt he had become “divisive” among a polarised fanbase before deciding to stand down from the job following defeat in the Euro 2024 final.

Southgate spent eight years in charge of the men’s senior team and took his side to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup as well as successive European Championship finals.

Despite all of the highs of his tenure, the 55-year-old believes a change in perception from some of the England supporters had played its part – and also felt his heart just was not in the job any more.

Gareth Southgate: I had become divisive among England fanbase

John Stones speaks out on Phil Foden’s England omission

09:27 , Richard Jolly

John Stones believes Phil Foden has given Thomas Tuchel a “good headache” as he picks his latest squad and said he knows the England manager “loves” his Manchester City teammate.

“I know he wants to be,” Stones said when asked if Foden should be recalled.

“He's been a huge part of it. I know that the manager loves him. It's a privileged place to be.

“We've all got a fight to be there and earn the shirt. I think, without a doubt, he's given him a good headache for selection, whenever that is."

'Phil is back'

09:22 , Mike Jones

Picking up on the possible selection or omission of Phil Foden, Pep Guardiola believes Thomas Tuchel will make the correct decision for England.

“Thomas is so smart and wise and knows exactly what he needs,” the City boss said following City’s win over Dortmund.

“I think Thomas knows perfectly Phil and Phil is playing better and better.

“England is lucky to have many players in this position and that’s what he had to push and be better and say, ‘I’m going to show how good I am’.”

He also summed up his thoughts on Foden’s resurgence by simply saying: “Phil is back.”

Will Foden return?

09:18 , Mike Jones

Another notable omission has been Manchester City’s Phil Foden.

At the beginning of the year when Thomas Tuchel took over as head coach, the midfielder was out of sorts and struggling with form and injuries.

Getting dropped was an understandable consequence to a difficult 2024/25 season for him but slowly he is finding his feet again.

A star performance in City’s 4-1 win over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night may have just come too late but could also have confirmed to Tuchel that Foden is ready to return to the England set-up.

That said, Tuchel may not want the headache of trying to fit the midfielder into a starting line-up that has gelled under the German - which was something his predecessor, Gareth Southgate, also struggled with.

Jude Bellingham in line for England recall

09:12 , Mike Jones

Jude Bellingham looks set to return to the England squad when boss Thomas Tuchel names his final selection of the year.

This will be the penultimate camp before Tuchel names his squad for the World Cup and the England boss is not expected to stick as rigidly to the group as he did last month.

As for why he left Bellingham out of the previous squad, Tuchel cited his lack of rhythm given the Real Madrid star had only recently returned from shoulder surgery.

But the 2024-25 England men’s senior player of the year is now expected to return to the fold, having scored three times in his five Real appearances since the October camp.

England squad to be announced at 10am

09:06 , Mike Jones

Thomas Tuchel will name his England squad for the next couple of fixtures at 10am.

It will be the last squad of the year and a chance for the England boss to possibly recall some of the bigger names who have been omitted from previous camps.

Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Jack Grealish are all waiting to see if they’ve made the cut or whether Tuchel will stick to the players he’s gotten used to over the last couple of international breaks.

John Stones speaks out on Phil Foden’s England omission after Champions League brace

08:40 , Chris Wilson

John Stones believes Phil Foden has given Thomas Tuchel a “good headache” as he picks his latest squad and said he knows the England manager “loves” his Manchester City teammate.

Foden has not been chosen by Tuchel for either the September or October internationals, with the England manager also omitting Jude Bellingham last month as he sought to stick with the players who had won 5-0 in Serbia.

Tuchel will announce his squad for the November World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Albania on Friday and Foden made his case with two goals in City’s 4-1 win over Borussia Dortmund.

Who is injured?

08:30 , Chris Wilson

There are some notable names who can’t be a part of this month’s squad due to injury, with Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke among those who would have hoped to be involved.

Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke is also sidelined, as is Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings.

Players who’ve made recent returns from injury – but who are unlikely to make the squad because of it – include Alexander-Arnold, Wharton and John Stones among others.

The passionate Harry Kane speech driving England’s World Cup dream

08:13 , Chris Wilson

In the Riga dressing room after England had clinched World Cup 2026qualification with a 5-0 win over Latvia, Harry Kane gave a speech in which he spoke about “keeping the same hunger” and ensuring the next camp is now treated as a proper build-up. This, the captain told less experienced teammates, is a key to going far in campaigns.

But not necessarily winning them, some might point out, since Kane hasn’t yet done that with England. And yet, in all of this, the goalscorer did display an attitude that really separates top players.

For all the focus on “winners” and “getting over the line,” it’s often said in elite sport that the true key to that is how you deal with failure. Teammates of figures like Lionel Messi and Michael Jordan say they often had a certain “delusion” in the sense of not allowing defeats to foster self-doubt. They were immediately wiped.

When is the 2026 World Cup?

07:55 , Chris Wilson

The next edition of the World Cup takes place in cities across the United States, Mexico and Canada between 11 June and 19 July 2026.

Host cities include New Jersey/New York, Seattle, LA, Dallas, Boston, Mexico City, Toronto and Vancouver, with the final taking place at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The draw for the tournament has not been made yet – that takes place on 5 December – but the full schedule can be found on the Fifa website here.

Every team that has qualified for the World Cup 2026

07:43 , Chris Wilson

England have become the latest team to qualify for the World Cup 2026, with more set to join them as international qualification resumes.

With the co-hosts USA, Canada and Mexico, there are now 28 countries confirmed, including three debutants with Jordan and Uzbekistan and the Cape Verde islands through to the 48-team finals.

This format means that more nations than ever will qualify from each of the seven main federations, but despite some spots already having been secured, teams in Europe still have a long way to go in their qualifying campaigns.

England have qualified for the World Cup but need to fix these issues to win it

07:35 , Chris Wilson

The report from last time out as the Three Lions sealed qualification...

So, England become the first European side to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, but the real wonder is whether that actually says anything more about their capability of finishing first next summer.

Thomas Tuchel of course, acknowledged that this was the expectation, but said it shouldn’t be completely taken for granted that it is a landmark achievement, even if this 5-0 in front of some trees in Riga wasn’t exactly Stockholm 1989 or Rome 1997. No bloodied bandages were required, as were seen with Terry Butcher and Paul Ince in those games.

It instead couldn’t have been easier, as this thrashing of Latvia made it six wins from six with 18 goals and none conceded. Almost perfect.
