Last summer’s World Cup and the Nations League excitement feel a long time ago now, but Gareth Southgate will be hoping England can carry their feel-good factor through to the qualification campaign for the European Championships, beginning later this month.
As was the case with his first squad after the World Cup triumph last year, a few new faces are expected in the squad to face Czech Republic and Montenegro later this month as the Three Lions begin their march towards Euro 2020.
Declan Rice is enjoying the best seasons of his young career at West Ham and is now readily available to Southgate having seen his association change from Republic of Ireland ratified by Fifa, while Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse, who earned one cap from the bench in 2017, looks set to be recalled.
Tottenham’s Dele Alli returned to first team action after seven weeks out last weekend and is expected to make the squad, though a number of his Spurs teammates, such as Kieran Trippier, Harry Winks and Eric Dier, are in doubt after recent injury struggles.
Southgate’s squad announcement is expected at 2pm GMT today. Stay tuned for live updates…
