The former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene is set to join England as a batting consultant for the Test and limited-overs series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates.

Jayawardene, who ended his glittering 18-year international career after the World Cup and is a master in sub-continental conditions, has previously worked with the England head coach, Trevor Bayliss, and his assistant, Paul Farbrace, during their time in charge of Sri Lanka.

An ECB spokesperson said: “We have had some initial conversations with Mahela Jayawardene around a possible short-term consultancy role at the start of the UAE tour - given his familiarity with the conditions. Nothing has been agreed at this stage.”

Known as an expert player of spin, the 38-year-old scored 11,814 Test runs and 12,650 runs in one-day internationals.
