Covid surges by 50% in a week in England's worst hotspot - with 124 areas on the rise

England's worst Covid hotspot has seen new cases rise by nearly 50 per cent in just a week, latest figures show.

Corby in Northamptonshire has a rate of 191.1 infections per 100,000 people, up from 130.2 in the previous seven days.

It is one of 124 places in the country where the number of infections went up in the seven days to Sunday.

Melton and Richmondshire also saw massive rises - with the rate in the latter more than three times higher than it was the previous seven days.

Of 315 local authority areas in England, 183 saw rates fall, while eight remain unchanged.

It comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson said his "roadmap" to bring the country out of Covid restrictions was "on course", despite issues with vaccine supply.

BORIS JOHNSON REVEALS HE WILL GET ASTRAZENECA JAB TOMORROW

The five areas with the biggest week-on-week rise are:

  • Melton (up from 43.0 to 121.1)
  • Richmondshire (29.8 to 106.1)
  • Corby (130.2 to 191.1)
  • North East Lincolnshire (108.4 to 152.9)
  • North Lincolnshire (92.3 to 136.4)

The Prime Minister this evening declared Covid vaccines are safe - and said he would be getting his tomorrow.

Boris Johnson said he would receive an Oxford/Astrazeneca vaccine, and said research had shown the jab was safe.

He admitted that there is an issue with vaccine supply for the coming weeks - but said his roadmap for reopening the country is still on target.

He stated from a briefing at Downing Street: "The Oxford vaccine is safe, the Pfizer vaccine is safe, the thing that isn't safe is catching Covid."

He said that with more than 25 million people vaccinated, there is "no change" to his roadmap, stating: "We remain on track to return to the things we love."

But he said that was dependent on data showing the country is defeating the virus.

England's chief medical officer Prof Chris Whitty echoed Mr Johnson's view, calling on people to continue taking vaccine when offered.

"By being vaccinated people protect themselves, but they also reduce the risk of passing the virus to other people," he said.

Earlier today 95 coronavirus deaths were confirmed, bringing the UK's death toll to 125,926.

A further 6,303 people have tested positive for the virus - down slightly from the 6,753 last Thursday and much lower than the 12,057 a month ago.
