England's World Cup semi-final defeat to USA watched by 11.7million people

England's World Cup semi-final defeat was seen by 11.7million people – the most watched TV event this year.

Almost one million more tuned in to cheer on the team against the US than the next most-watched TV show in 2019, Line of Duty, which peaked at 10.9million.

And there were 400,000 more viewers for Tuesday night’s 2-1 loss than there were for the Champions League final on BT Sport last month.

Of the 11.3million who saw Liverpool beat Tottenham , 6.5million watched on their TV.

The BBC has yet to release digital figures for the World Cup in France. The match had a peak audience share of 50.8%.
