England's World Cup Lionesses smash TV viewing records as 11.7 million fans tune in to semi-final

England's defeat to the United States in the Women's World Cup semi-final on Tuesday has shattered TV viewing records.

Phil Neville's players were left in tears on the pitch after failing to reach the final of the tournament in France.

But they have succeeded in raising the profile of the women's game back home in England.

The match last night was watched by a peak audience of 11.7million - the UK's biggest ever TV viewing figure for a women's football match.

It also means the match, which was screened live on BBC1, is the most-watched TV programme of the year so far on all British channels.

The impressive viewing figures were released by the BBC.

It means 400,000 more people watched the game than tuned in for the men's Champions League final last month between Liverpool FC and Tottenham on BT Sport.

England were beaten 2-1 in the game in Lyon after a thrilling second half battle which saw the Lionesses have a goal ruled out by VAR and also miss a penalty.

Before this summer's World Cup, the previous record TV audience for a women's game in the UK was 4 million viewers.

The England team of 2019 have broken the record three times on their way to the semi-final last night.
