England's Will Ospreay steals the show at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 14 as former WWE superstar wins title

New Japan Pro Wrestling is holding its biggest show of the year - Wrestle Kingdom 14 - this weekend.

And for the first time in history, the epic annual event at the Tokyo Dome is taking place over two days.

The culmination of two nights of wrestling will result in the crowning of NJPW's first Double Champion, with both the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental titles up for grabs.

Today saw IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada edge out Kota Ibushi and Tetsuya Naito dethrone IWGP Intercontinental Champion Jay White to set up tomorrow's main event.

Kazuchika Okada faced Kota Ibushi at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 14 (NJPW)

Okada and Ibushi maintained a high pace throughout their clash, with Ibushi looking to take all the champion could throw at him in an epic near 40-minute wrestling match.

Ibushi looked to have changed the tide after striking Okada with a devastating Kamigoye (Knee Strike) before reversing Okada's Rainmaker finish to hit the champion with one of his own.

But while Ibushi proved resilient for the majority of the match, not even he could withstand five Rainmakers as Okada retained his  title and earned himself a spot in the main event of night two.

In the co-main event, Naito secured his chance to face Okada by defeating Jay White and clinching the IWGP Intercontinental Championship for the fifth time in his storied career.

White focused his early attacks on the legs of Naito, which slowed down the challenger and with the assistance of Gedo, it looked as though White would be leaving as champion.

But a shift in momentum saw Naito land two Destinos on his way to winning the belt.

Britain's Will Ospreay put his IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship on the line against Hiromu Takahashi and the pair tore down the Tokyo Dome in an instant classic.

The high flyer from Essex welcomed back Takahashi to the ring, following a broken neck, which the member of Los Ingobernables de Japon suffered in July 2018.

Takahashi was keen to pick up where he left off and the two men were hell bent on inflicting as much pain on each other as possible in the match of the night.

In the mix of some insane aerial assaults it was Takahashi who was able to defeat Ospreay after hitting the Timebomb to capture the gold from Ospreay.

Former WWE star Dean Ambrose, now AEW's Jon Moxley, captured the IWGP United States Championship for the second time in his career by besting Lance Archer.

He triumphed in a brutal Texas Deathmatch, which saw the rivals utilise a variety of weapons and Archer even launch one of the New Japan Young Lions at Moxley.

Having survived being nearly suffocated by a carrier bag, Moxley set up some tables outside the ring and landed a Death Rider on Archer from the apron through the tables.

The champion was unable to answer the 10-count and as such lost the match and his title.

Following the match, Moxley took to the microphone and said that he was a gambler who came to Tokyo to leave with everything or nothing.

He will defend the title on night two against Juice Robinson, who he previously defeated to first claim the championship back in June.

Elsewhere on the card, the team of Robinson and David Finlay become IWGP Tag Team Champions, defeating Guerrillas of Destiny.

Aside from multiple eight man tag team matches, which are a staple of the NJPW shows, a notable mention must go to Jushin 'Thunder' Liger, who wrestled in his penultimate match of his incredible career.

Liger teamed with Tatsumi Fujinami, The Great Sasuke and Tiger Mask to take on the team of Naoki Sano, Shinjiro Otani, Tatsuhiko Takaiwa & Ryusuke Taguchi.

The high flying pioneer will hope to have better luck on night two of Wrestle Kingdom, as he and his team suffered an unexpected defeat.

His retirement match will see him team with Naoki Sano against Hiromu Takahashi and Ryu Lee.
