England's Lucy Bronze crowned women's player-of-the-year at UEFA awards

Lucy Bronze has been crowned European player-of-the-year.

The Lionesses defender beat off competition from Lyon club-mates Amandine Henry and Ada Hegerberg to land the prestigious award in Monaco.

Bronze was preparing for England's friendly in Belgium when the results were announced following a poll among coaches and journalists from Uefa's member associations.

It is the first time an English player has been recognised for the award in its eight-year history and caps a stunning 12 months for the versatile right-back.

She was one of the stars of the World Cup in France and came second in the player-of-the-tournament behind American Megan Rapinoe.

Her trademark runs from right-back were a highlight of the campaign and she grabbed a vital goal in the quarter-final victory over Norway.

The native north-easterner – who grew up on the island of Lindisfarne – also claimed a Champions League medal last May after Lyon defeated Barcelona in the final.

Lionesses coach Phil Neville was gushing in his praise of Bronze after the victory over the Norwegians in Le Havre saying: “Lucy is the best player in the world – without a shadow of a doubt – with her athleticism and quality.

“There's no player like her in the world. I played full-back – but I never got to that level.”
