England's Harry Kane breaks penalty miss silence with devastated Twitter response

Harry Kane has broken his silence after his devastating penalty miss against France, to say it'll take 'some time to get over,' as he told England fans that he was "absolutely gutted."

An audience in excess of 20 million tuned into ITV to watch the World Cup quarter final, with many others heading to fan zones and pubs and bars across the country to cheer on Gareth Southgate's side. England fell behind before half time, as Aurelien Tchouameni put France ahead in the 17th minute, before captain Kane got the Three Lions back on level terms from the spot not long after half time.

In a closely fought battle, France then went 2-1 up in the 78th minute, thank to Olivier Giroud, before Kane had a chance to equalise again with another penalty. However, sadly for the skipper and England fans in Qatar and across the result, he blasted his spot kick over the bar. The Tottenham star looked distraught in the immediate aftermath of the miss and then again at full time, when he was condoled by manager Southgate.

And, on Sunday morning, as England prepared to head home, Kane took to Twitter to reflect on his heartbreaking night. He wrote: "Absolutely gutted. We’ve given it everything and it’s come down to a small detail which I take responsibility for. There’s no hiding from it, it hurts and it’ll take some time to get over it but that’s part of sport."

He added: "Now it’s about using the experience to be mentally and physically stronger for the next challenge. Thanks for all the support throughout the tournament - it means a lot

Plenty of responses quickly flooded in to Kane's post, with one England fan telling him: "Nah Harry, you did us proud. It takes a lot to step up, and you can’t win them all" and another reacting: "You and the rest of the squad are heroes. Hold your head up and bring it home in 2 years."
