'England's Gareth Southgate shows bandwagon Boris Johnson how you unite the nation'

Sadly for Priti Patel and Boris Johnson we’ve run out of room on the bandwagon.

What on earth will the likes of the Home Secretary – who backed England fans booing Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane for taking the knee – do now?

Or the Prime Minister who had his Donald Trump ‘good people on both sides’ moment when he too refused to condemn those unwilling to embrace the players’ fight for racial justice ahead of each England game at the start of the Euros.

Throw in the people who lambasted our players during those early weeks of the tournament. They’ll have been the ones cheering loudest on Saturday night.

Now read Gareth Southgate’s words in the wake of that stress-free win over Ukraine to reach tomorrow’s semi-final against Denmark.

“We’ve had a lot of division for a little while,” he said, “but I know that these England nights are nights that bring everybody together.”

Oh for a man like Southgate to unify the country rather than those who seek to divide us. It was Southgate, remember, who put himself front and centre to clarify – for the people already well aware, but unwilling to listen – that the players couldn’t care less about Marxism, just racial equality.

It was Southgate who refused to drop Sterling from the England team for the first game against Croatia, when many people demanded it.

Sterling vindicated that faith with the winning goal and has arguably been the most influential member of the side ever since.

The 26-year-old, who grew up in North West London, epitomises this England team: Decent, honest and willing to take on the tough conversations as well as the tough opponents.

Patel – the kind of person who would unplug your life support machine to charge her phone – has rightly been annihilated since brazenly tweeting her support on Saturday night.

As has already been well documented, if football came home she’d deport it.

All being well we’ll beat Denmark to reach England’s first final since 1966 on Sunday. It will be good fun watching Patel and Johnson squirm until then.
