R represents the average number of people each Covid-19 positive person goes onto infect with the virus.
Every 10 people who have coronavirus will infect between 9 and 12 others when the R number is between 0.9 and 1.2.
The R value has begun to climb in England as Monday’s saw self-isolation rules for double-jabbed Britons relaxed.
In comparison, the R value was at 0.8 to 1 last week.
The Covid outbreak can grow exponentially when the R figure is above one.
When the R rate is below one, the epidemic is shrinking.
It comes after the UK was issued a stark warning about the potential of a fourth deadly wave of coronavirus.
The Israeli scientist warned the UK must act fast to roll out a Covid vaccine booster and convince heistant sceptics to get the jab or face the possibility of a fourth Covid wave.
Elsewhere on Friday, England’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty encouraged people to get the jab.
The professor warned there were some “very sick” young adults in hospital with the virus.
He tweeted: “The great majority of adults have been vaccinated. Four weeks working on a Covid ward makes stark the reality that the majority of our hospitalised Covid patients are unvaccinated and regret delaying. Some are very sick including young adults. Please don’t delay your vaccine.”
