England's Bob Weighton becomes world's oldest man, at 111 - and he's nearly 112

Britain's oldest man is now the world's oldest man but he will not be celebrating his record.

Bob Weighton, a 111 -year-old former teacher and engineer has become the world's oldest man, six month's after he became Britain's oldest man.

The death of 112-year-old Chitetsu Watanabe, from Japan, means Hull-born Mr Weighton is now the oldest man on earth. Mr Weighton became Britain's oldest man in August 2019, following Alfred Smith's death. Alfred and Bob were born on the same day, March 29, 1908.

But Mr Weighton, who still lives in his own flat, will not be celebrating his achievement, as a mark of respect to Mr Watanabe and his family.

Mr Weighton told Press Association: "Well, I don't really feel satisfied because it means someone else has died.

"I just accept it as a fact, it's not something I ever intended, wanted or worked for but it's just one of those facts of life.

"You might find it amazing but it's just one of those things."

Mr Weighton is due to turn 112 next month. During his life, the UK has had 22 different prime ministers, five monarchs and fought two World Wars. Mr Weighton has lived in the UK, Canada and Taiwan. He helped decipher Japanese messages for the Allies during the Second World War .

On his 111th birthday last year, Mr Weighton was asked what the secret to a long life is.

A smiling Mr Weighton - who still has a full head of hair - told BBC: "I wouldn't know, that is the commonest question, yes, but I have no answer. Except to avoid dying."

Britain's oldest woman, Dorset's Joan Hocquard, was born on the same day as Mr Weighton. Britain's second oldest woman, Violet Davies-Evans, from Spalding, Lincolnshire, was born the day after.

The UK's longest life ever record belongs to Charlotte Hughes, from Hartlepool, who died in Redcar aged 115 in 1993.
