England's best beaches and seaside towns for 2020 named

The Cornish village of St Mawes, has been voted the best seaside town in England this year.

It beat off stiff competition from other popular Cornish beach towns such as Padstow and St Ives.

St Mawes ranked as one of the least crowded destinations, with a five-star rating for peace and quiet in a survey conducted by consumer website Which?

More than 4,000 Which? readers took part in the survey, voting for the best seaside towns to visit in 2020.

Southwold (84%), and arty Aldeburgh (83%) also made the top five.

Last year’s winner, Bamburgh (83%) in Northumberland also proved popular, receiving the full five stars for its beautiful beach.

The survey was carried out before coronavirus hit – so social distancing measures had no impact on results.

For those looking for affordable overnight stays near a beach, Whitby in North Yorkshire has an average hotel price of £84 - making it considerably cheaper than Saltburn-by-the-Sea, £104 per night.

Skegness was voted the worst seaside town in the survey, survey with a customer score of 44%.
