England rugby league coach Shaun Wane takes pay cut as RFL battles coronavirus crisis

England coach Shaun Wane is among the senior RFL employees to take a significant pay cut amid the coronavirus crisis.

The RFL confirmed last week that their executives had voluntarily accepted cuts to their wages. And the governing body has confirmed to Mirror Sport that former Wigan boss Wane - who was only appointed to the role in early February - is among them.

Wane was handed the reigns ahead of the planned Ashes series with Australia this autumn, which is now in significant doubt. The 55-year-old spoke publicly on Thursday to urge people to stay indoors and ease pressure on the NHS.

Wane said: “I know these are testing times for everybody in the world.

“I’ve been reading today that people around my age group are struggling to stay within the recommended government guidelines.

“They are very simple to be honest - stay indoors unless it’s absolutely essential that you need to go out.

“The fact is that this virus is that dangerous that you don’t need to have the symptoms to spread it.

“People are leaving us before their time’s up and that’s wrong so we need to stay in, it’s very simple.

“Make sure you have a focus in your day. Organise your day, plan your day, make improvements to get better. That’s what you need to strive to do and this will be over.

“This will end and we need to make sure we come through the back end of this and become better people, better at everything.

“Let’s sure we make sure we do the right thing, look after the NHS and just stay in.”

Members of the Super League executive board including chief executive Robert Elstone have also taken significant pay cuts.
