England rugby chiefs to review Swing Low Sweet Chariot anthem amid slavery links

England rugby chiefs have launched a review into the Swing Low, Sweet Chariot anthem due to its links to slavery.

With the Black Lives Matter movement inspiring international change to institutional racism, the Rugby Football Union has decided now is the time to review the song’s “historical context”.

“The RFU has stated we need to do more to achieve diversity and we are determined to accelerate change and grow awareness,” said a spokesperson.

“The Swing Low Sweet Chariot song has long been part of the culture of rugby and is sung by many who have no awareness of its origins or its sensitivities.

“We are reviewing its historical context and our role in educating fans to make informed decisions.”

The review comes after England star Maro Itoje addressed the use of the song in an interview.

“I don't think anyone at Twickenham is singing it with malicious intent,” he said. “But the background of that song is complicated.”

The song is thought to have originated among American slave workers in the 19th century.

It was first heard at Twickenham during the 1987 Middlesex Sevens as Martin ‘Chariots” Offiah introduced himself to the national stage by running rings round the opposition playing for Rosslyn Park.

Premiership leaders Exeter have bolstered their squad with the signing of young Newcastle star Josh Hodge.

The 20-year old wing or fullback enjoyed an outstanding Junior World Cup with England last year and was called into the senior Six Nations squad this year by Eddie Jones to get a taste of the high life.

Chiefs boss Rob Baxter said: ”He's just one of those guys that you can see bags of potential in. He's a good goalkicker, genuine pace, a talented ball player and someone with lots of physical development still in him.”
