England considering invitation to tour Pakistan for the first time since 2005

The England men's cricket team have been officially invited to compete in Pakistan next year.

The ECB confirmed on Thursday that an invitation had been received from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for England to embark upon a short, limited-overs tour to the country in early 2021.

And while the ECB said they welcome the return of international cricket to Pakistan, they added that a number of factors will have to be considered including Covid-19 protocols, levels of security and England's busy schedule.

"We will be liaising with the PCB, and as well as other partners over the coming weeks to work through these considerations, before a final decision will be taken in due course," the governing body's statement concluded.

England have not played in Pakistan since all the way back in 2005, with their last two tours taking place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Pakistan played their 'home' series in the UAE following a terrorist attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore in 2009 that left eight people dead.

However, international cricket has slowly returned to the country in recent years, with Zimbabwe - who are due to return later this month - playing limited-overs matches there in 2015.

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have both toured Pakistan more recently, while Kumar Sangakkara led an MCC trip earlier in 2020.

Pakistan visited England in August and September, losing a three-match Test series 1-0 and drawing the subsequent T20I series 1-1.

All matches were played behind closed doors in bio-secure bubbles due to the coronavirus pandemic.
