England players "were not involved" in decision to cancel Pakistan tour

Team England Player Partnership (TEPP), who represent England's centrally contracted cricketers, have said the ECB did not ask the players whether they were "prepared to tour Pakistan " before the decision was made to cancel the trip.

The England men's and women's teams were due to visit Pakistan next month, but the ECB made the decision to scrap the tour, citing "the mental and physical well-being of our players and support staff" as the main reason behind the cancellation.

They also stated that "there are increasing concerns about travelling to the region", after New Zealand abandoned their own tour of Pakistan due to a "specific and credible threat against the team."

However, it has now been revealed that the players did not have a say in the decision, with a spokesperson for the TEPP telling the Daily Mail : "At no stage has the ECB ever asked Team England Player Partnership or the teams, men and women, whether the tour should go ahead or whether players were prepared to tour Pakistan.

"At no stage has Team England Player Partnership informed the ECB that the players would not be touring.

"The ECB board met last Sunday to debate the tour to Pakistan. That afternoon we were informed the tour had been cancelled.

"Team England Player Partnership was not asked for our input and we were not involved in the decision to cancel the tour."

It comes after England captain Heather Knight revealed the decision to cancel the tour was made "above our heads".

She said: "We found yesterday that the board had made the decision for us not to go and it’s above our heads a little bit.

"I think the conversation and the communication between the board and PCA is a strong one, and it was a tricky situation with what had gone on with New Zealand.

"I think taking it out of our hands is probably the right thing to do and, and that was done with a view to try and look after the players.

"It’s for the people above us to make those decisions and for us to get on with them and accept wherever they are."
