England player returns to rugby just four months after cancer treatment

Newcastle Falcons' back Johnny Williams is returning to rugby today just four months after his final round of chemotherapy for testicular cancer.

The 23-year-old's last game of rugby was in June, when he played for England against the Barbarians at Twickenham, scoring a try in an entertaining 51-43 win.

However, the centre then watched the Rugby World Cup in Japan from a hospital bed as he received treatment for the illness.

But, having had his final round of treatment, Williams returned to first team training at Newcastle in November.

He's now ready to return to the field and has been named in a Newcastle XV side to take on Watsonians in Melrose this afternoon.

"We are just glad for him as a person that he is healthy and overcoming the challenge," said Newcastle boss Dean Richards.

"He is at his happiest when he is on a rugby field, so for him to be able to get out there again must be a really good feeling.

"From the club's point of view it's obviously great to have another outstanding player fit and available for selection, but more than anything we're just glad that a degree of normality is returning to Johnny's life after what has clearly been a very difficult time."
