England player ratings vs Scotland: Harry Kane stinker as Mason Mount stands out

Jordan Pickford Distribution a little slack in the opening stages but made a strong one-handed stop to deny Stephen O'Donnell on the half hour. 6

Reece James Delivered a couple of good crosses but found things tough when Kieran Tierney pushed up to join Andy Robertson down Scotland's left. Fired over from a good position ten minutes into the second half. 5

John Stones Made a good block to deny Che Adams in the fourth minute after O'Donnell crossed from the right and almost put England in front with a powerful header from a Mount corner. Dependable. 6

Tyrone Mings Strong in the air against the physical presence of Lyndon Dykes. Made a good headed clearance from Scotland's first set piece delivery to set the tone for his individual performance. 6

Luke Shaw Showed more attacking intent than Kieran Trippier had on Sunday, such as when he linked up well with Mount to win a corner midway through the first half. Found himself in fantastic position with less than 20 minutes to go but was caught in two minds over whether to shoot or cross so did neither and sent the ball out of play. 5

Kalvin Phillips Did not make as much impact compared to versus Croatia. Fantastic pass over the top to find Phil Foden in the 17th minute except that Manchester City forward had strayed marginally offside. 5

Declan Rice Tidy and effective without progressing the ball forward too often. Another evening where he did a lot of the unheralded and unseen work that many viewers fail to notice unless tracking closely. 6

Mason Mount Had England's first chance, attempting to curl into the right corner from the edge of the area only for it to be deflected for a corner that was then delivered to Stones' head. Went close soon after half time with another fine attempt. England's most threatening player. 7

Phil Foden Lively from the off but lacked end product and faded from prominence as the evening progressed before being replaced by Jack Grealish. 5

Harry Kane A stinker, although the service was not oustanding. Looked way off his best, his only touch in the Scotland penalty area coming when heading wide in the first half. Subbed for Marcus Rashford and could have no complaints. 4

Raheem Sterling Quiet first half but found some joy early in the second, sending in a dangerous low cross that Foden was close to finishing. 5

Substitutes

Jack Grealish (for Foden 63) Entered to great fanfare but did not make much of an impact. 5

Marcus Rashford (for Kane 74) n/a

Not used: Sam Johnstone, Aaron Ramsdale, Harry Maguire, Ben Chilwell, Jordan Henderson, Kieran Trippier, Conor Coady, Jadon Sancho, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Jude Bellingham.
