England player ratings vs Germany: Kane redemption as Sterling stars and Grealish leaves mark

Jordan Pickford (Everton) Got down really well to deny Timo Werner a little more than half an hour in and then made another decent stop to to turn a fizzing Kai Havertz attempt over the bar early in the second period. Fortunate to see a Thomas Muller attempt drag just wide at 1-0 but he's having an outstanding tournament. 7

Kyle Walker (Manchester City) Passing poor to begin with but diligent defensively on the right of the three. 7

John Stones (Manchester City) Impeccable. It felt like he won every aerial duel, while his passing was predominantly good. 7

Harry Maguire (Manchester United) England's biggest threat from set pieces, getting his head on a pair of first-half deliveries for Manuel Neuer to save. Like the pair next to him, defended excellently. 7

Kieran Trippier (Atletico Madrid) Excellent at right wing back, offering support to Bukayo Saka ahead of him and Walker behind. Not just a set-piece taker. 7

Kalvin Phillips (Leeds United) Struggled early on as Germany's midfield bypassed him with ease but grew into it and never afraid to get stuck in. Unsurprisingly booked near half time for a meaty challenge on Toni Kroos. Passing was very good. 7

Declan Rice (West Ham United) Booked early on for a foul on Leon Goretzka just outside the penalty area as Germany countered only to block Kai Havertz's strike as part of the wall. Looked a little overwhelmed in those opening exchanges but managed to shake off the tricky start to go toe to toe with a couple of the world's best midfielders. 7

Luke Shaw (Manchester United) Unconvincing start but grew into the game and provided the cross to set up Sterling for the opener. 6

Bukayo Saka (Arsenal) Provided the spark for England's first promising spell after a difficult opening, winning a free kick wide on the right before getting the better of Robin Gosens in a duel soon after. England needed to get him on the ball a bit more as he offered fearlessness and directness. But faded from the action in second half and was replaced by Jack Grealish with little more than 20 minutes left. 6

Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur) The relief was palpable as he raced away to celebrate England's second goal of the game and his first of a tournament that looked to be going horribly wrong. The captain was a non-entity for most of the opening half, touching the ball twice in first 35 minutes and he then saw his chance to score go wayward following a heavy first touch that allowed Mats Hummels to get back and in the way with Neuer beaten. Kane then took a bang to a knee early in the second half, requiring treatment, but persisted without making any impact on proceedings until linking play well in the build up to Sterling's goal and then getting on the end of Jack Grealish's centre. 6

Raheem Sterling (Manchester City) Produced England's first attempt on target, sending a long-range curler towards the right corner only for the diving Neuer to get a strong hand to it. Looked England's most threatening player in open play and justifiably got on the end of Shaw's well-placed cross to break the deadlock. 8

Substitutes

Jack Grealish (for Saka, 69) The people's champion. Played a role in build up to Sterling's goal and provided the assist for Kane's. Does he start the quarter-final? 7

Not used: Aaron Ramsdale (Sheffield United), Sam Johnstone (West Bromwich Albion), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Tyrone Mings (Aston Villa), Conor Coady (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund), Mason Mount (Chelsea), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Reece James (Chelsea), Jude Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund).
