England player ratings as Declan Rice proves Jordan Henderson mistake and Jordan Pickford recovers

Jordan Pickford - 6

Should he have done better for Damsgaard’s free-kick? His worst game of the tournament regardless. Passing unusually poor and unsettled his side on more than one occasion in the first after gifting the ball straight back to Denmark, but much-improved in the second half and extra-time.

Kyle Walker - 7

Sprinted back to stop Damsgard breaking through one-on-one early on. Intercepted well and cleared upfield when England were under pressure. Could have offered more offensively though.

John Stones - 6

Not his best display. Struggled at times with Denmark’s physicality and played it too safe at times. Headed wide from a Shaw free-kick late on.

Harry Maguire - 7

Eager to get forward when given space on the ball. A repeated threat at set-pieces, denied a second goal in two games by a stunning save from Schmeichel. Nearly gifted Denmark a goal with a poor headed clearance but also nearly set up a last-minute winner with a lovely flick-on.

Luke Shaw - 6

Harshly penalised for the free-kick Denmark scored from. Didn’t get forward as much as he would have liked but crossing still dangerous when given the chance. Again a threat from set-pieces.

Declan Rice - 6

Poor at times from the West Ham man but grew into the game. Struggled to protect the England defence when they looked shaky in the first half. Not the best on the ball but won some crucial battles. A little fortunate to be keeping his place ahead of Jordan Henderson.

Kalvin Phillips - 6

Slightly better than Rice but in the same boat as England struggled to keep hold of possession in the first half. Showed an eagerness to get forward early on and passed it around reasonably well only to fade a little before finishing strongly in extra-time.

Bukayo Saka - 7

Another bright performance from the Arsenal youngster. He just terrifies defenders when running with the ball. Perfectly-timed low cross to force the equaliser. Unlucky to be withdrawn for Grealish.

Mason Mount - 6

Started brightly but was unable to keep it up. Got one shot caught under his feet. Tried to slow play down too much and was often dispossessed as a result. Forced Schmeichel to tip one over with a cross-cum-shot.

Raheem Sterling - 8

Won the penalty for Kane to fire England ahead with a great run. Caused Denmark constant problems with his pace but could have done better when shooting straight at Schmeichel. Linked up well with Shaw in the second half.

Harry Kane - 8

Alert to fire England ahead in extra-time after his penalty was saved. Whipped in a low cross early on that was just beyond Sterling before unleashing Saka to set up the equaliser. Fired a couple of shots off-target but heavily involved in most of England’s attacking play.

Jack Grealish (on for Saka, 69) - 6

His introduction brought loud cheers and he wasted no time in winning his first foul. Will be annoyed Kane didn’t leave the ball to him for a chance of a 90th minute winner. Then taken off at half-time in extra time for an extra defensive body.

Jordan Henderson (on for Rice, 95) - 7

A great overlapping attacking threat down the right, whipping in a couple of crosses then helped England see it out after taking the lead.

Phil Foden (on for Mount, 95) - 7

Like Henderson, he made a difference in helping control midfield. So smart on the ball.

Kieran Trippier (on for Grealish, 105) - N/A

Brought on to help see the game out as England switched to a back five after taking the lead.
