England plan to rest some big stars before this summer's Cricket World Cup

Post-IPL breather: Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler will be given the chance to rest before the World Cup (Picture: AFP/Getty Images)

England name their preliminary World Cup squad on Wednesday but plan to rest some of their top players for the early part of the summer against Ireland and Pakistan.

The 15-man World Cup squad can be changed until May 23, a week before the tournament starts at The Kia Oval.

The squad to face Ireland and Pakistan will be bigger and will include Jofra Archer. Before that series the team will have a camp in Wales.

Those at the IPL, such as Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow, will be given a chance to miss some matches against Ireland and Pakistan in order to rest.

Stokes and Buttler are not set to travel to Dublin for the one-off ODI.

England also have World Cup warm-ups against Australia and Afghanistan to get their eye in for the tournament, for which they are favourites.
