England pacer Mark Wood ruled out of fourth-day's play in first Test against Sri Lanka

England fast bowler Mark Wood will not participate in the fourth day of the first Test match against Sri Lanka at Old Trafford due to a thigh injury, as announced prior to the start of play on Saturday.

The 34-year-old Durham paceman had to leave the field on Friday, just two deliveries into his 11th over.

LIVE UPDATES: 1st Test, Day 4

After being evaluated by the England medical team, the injury-prone bowler has been advised to take rest. Despite Wood's absence, England remain hopeful of taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

As play resumes, Sri Lanka find themselves at 204 for 6 in their second innings, with a slim lead of just 82 runs.

"England pace bowler Mark Wood has sustained a right thigh muscle injury late on the third day of the first Test against Sri Lanka at Old Trafford," the England and Wales Cricket Board said in a statement.

"He will not return to the field today and will continue to be assessed by the England medical team to determine the full extent of the injury."
