England omit Joe Root from T20 squad for South Africa tour as World Cup preparations continue

England's Test squad depart for their four-match tour of South Africa on Friday night and the selectors have announced their squads for the white-ball matches that follow.

England have three ODIs - their first matches in the format since July’s World Cup Final - and three T20s, which are seen as crucial preparation for next year’s World Cup in Australia.

With ODIs now of less importance, key players Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer, Jos Buttler and Mark Wood are rested, while there are first call-ups for Somerset’s Tom Banton, Worcestershire’s Pat Brown and the Lancashire duo Saqib Mahmood and Matt Parkinson.

All four made their T20 debuts in New Zealand last month.

Test skipper Joe Root is overlooked for the T20 squad as the selectors explore their options, but they insist he remains in their plans for the upcoming World Cup.

Otherwise that squad is at full strength with no space for many of those involved in the more experimental tour of New Zealand.

Moeen Ali is involved in both squads despite his Test exile, while Adil Rashid’s shoulder issues do not keep him out. Parkinson offers another wrist-spin option in both squads.

Surrey veteran Liam Plunkett, a key part of the World Cup win, is overlooked for both squads, while Sam Curran is preferred to David Willey as a left-arm option.

"These two squads were selected with an eye on the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2020,” said Ed Smith, the National Selector.

“We want to expand the pool of players who can perform successfully for England, while also helping the team to peak for major tournaments."
