England name team to face Australia as Eddie Jones relents and starts Marcus Smith

Eddie Jones has selected Marcus Smith to start at fly-half in England's match against Australia this weekend, with captain Owen Farrell returning to line up at inside centre.

Farrell, who partners Henry Slade in the midfield, was ruled out of last weekend's match due to a false positive Covid test.

Jones' decision to start Smith looked unlikely a few days ago, when Jones came under fire for using an ill-judged example of US Open champion Emma Raducanu as an example for Smith not to follow due to "distractions" off the court leading to her apparent downturn since winning the New York tournament. You can read his comments here.

Jonny May and Manu Tuilagi line up on the wings, while Freddie Steward is at full-back and Ben Youngs is at scrum-half.

Saturday's fixture at Twickenham, which is being broadcast live on Amazon Prime Video, will also see Maro Itoje make his 50th appearance for England when he is joined in the second row by Jonny Hill.

The forward pack is unchanged from England’s 69-3 win over Tonga last weekend, with Itoje and Hill joined by hooker Jamie George and props Ellis Genge and Kyle Sinckler.

Courtney Lawes stays at blind-side flanker, Sam Underhill is open-side flanker and Tom Curry is at No. 8.

Eddie Jones said: "We know this will be a tough test for us, we’re playing against a team who have been together a while and who have beat the world champions twice. As an Australian I know how much this game means.

"We’ve had a really good week of preparation, we’re looking to improve our performance this week and I think this side is building well."

England: Steward; Tuilagi, Slade, Farrell (capt) May; Smith, Youngs; Genge, George, Sinckler, Itoje, Hill, Lawes, Underhill, Curry.

Replacements: Blamire, Rodd, Stuart, Ewels, Dombrandt, Simmonds, Quirke, Malins.
