England manager Gareth Southgate: It feels like my stomach has been ripped out after painful Italy defeat

Gareth Southgate has said he feels like his “stomach has been being ripped out” after England’s penalty trauma against Italy in the Euro 2020 Final.

The morning after Sunday’s 3-2 shootout loss against Italy at Wembley, Southgate reflected on a painful defeat that means England’s wait for a first trophy since 1966 goes on.

“It has to be a step in the right direction,” said Southgate of reaching the final. “It's not ultimately where we wanted to get to and when you're so close, that's even more painful.

“Of course it feels like my stomach has been being ripped out this morning.

“But I know when my logical brain comes back to life in a few days, that is the process we have to go through and we've got to keep continuing that and England have to keep that track going, whoever is here, whoever is at the FA, whoever is at St. George's Park.

“That's what we have to build, that was the vision at the start and we're showing the signs, with the help of the clubs who are producing some fantastic young players.”
