England Lionesses game at Ashton Gate already sold-out

The first international football match to be played in Bristol for eight years is a sell-out with almost 27,000 tickets already snapped up for the two-match event more than a month in advance.

Tickets for the Arnold Clark Cup finale, which will see South Korea take on Italy and then England's Lionesses team play Belgium, have all sold out, and only a handful of hospitality tickets remain, according to bosses at Ashton Gate Stadium.

The two matches are the last in a round of three dates where the trophy, which was won by England as a prelude to their European Championship success last summer, and Ashton Gate will see whoever wins the four-team round-robin tournament crowned the winner.

Ashton Gate has only seen a sell-out crowd for sports games around half a dozen times since the stadium was three-quarters rebuilt in the mid 2010s - twice when Bristol City played Manchester United and Manchester City in the run to the EFL Cup semi-finals in 2017-2018, and a couple of the big Bristol Bears local derby matches against Bath Rugby in recent years. The most recent near sell-out was the visit of world champions South Africa to play Bristol Bears late last year.

The last time Bristol hosted senior international football was a Euro qualifier back in torrential rain at a half-rebuilt Ashton Gate in November 2015. Just 13,040 people saw England win 1-0 with a goal from future I'm A Celebrity winner Jill Scott, who retired from football after winning the Euros last summer.

The Arnold Clark Cup finale will take place on Wednesday, February 22, with the first game between South Korea and Italy kicking off at 4.45pm, and the England v Belgium game starting at 7.45pm.
