England: John Mitchell says Red Roses can 'dominate the world for a long time' after World Cup triumph

John Mitchell believes that England can sit atop women’s rugby for a long while yet after the Red Roses were crowned world champions on Saturday.

2022’s beaten finalists went one further with a 33-13 victory over Canada in the Women’s World Cup final at Twickenham in front of a record crowd of 81,885.

England are on an unbeaten run of 33 matches, and Mitchell, who was named World Rugby women’s coach of the year, said that the depth of the squad demonstrated how far the game had come.

"If you look at the 32 players that have accomplished greatness, and have been phenomenal for a large part of the past three years, that's come because of the depth we have created," Mitchell said.

"We can dominate the world for a long time, but the world's going to get better because people are starting to recognise how to resource their programs.”

Meg Jones, who starred from centre throughout the tournament, remarked that women’s sport was “on a high” following the Red Roses’ Six Nations triumph earlier in the year, followed by the England women’s football team winning the European Championships.

"You only have to look at the Six Nations and how we've grown,” she said.

“I think it's amazing how far we've come. Women's sport is on a high.”
