England international reveals awful injuries after playing on 4G pitch in sweltering heat

England scrum-half Dan Robson has shared a photo of a gruesome injury he says was inflicted by Lyon's 4G pitch during Wasps' European Challenge Cup defeat.

The English side fell to a narrow 20-18 loss at the hands of Top 14 side Lyon on Saturday, with Robson himself scoring the only try for Wasps in France as the game was played out in near 30°C heat. However, tries from Leo Berdeu and Yanis Charcosset for the hosts were enough to help them over the line, booking them a place in the final against Toulon in Marseille on May 27.

It looks like it will hurt twice as much for try-scorer Robson, who has 14 caps for his country, after he revealed the nasty-looking, carpet-burn injuries he says he sustained at Matmut Stadium at the weekend. The picture shows a large burn area on the side of his left leg as well as damage to his knee.

Writing on Twitter on Sunday, 30-year-old Robson said: "On a positive note, that was the last 4G we play on this season!" On the game, he said: "Not to be but incredibly proud of this group. Huge thank you to all the support we’ve had during this campaign. Two big games to finish the season on a high."

Four clubs play their home games on artificial surfaces in England's Gallagher Premiership: Saracens, Gloucester, Newcastle Falcons and Worcester Warriors.

As of the start of this season, players are able to play with leggings on whether or not the pitch is artificial.
