England icon Jimmy Greaves is set to receive an MBE in the New Year's Honours list after a lengthy campaign.
Greaves, 80, was part of England's 1966 World Cup winning squad, along with Ron Flowers, 86, who will also be given the accollade, as reports The Sun .
The recognition of the pair means that the whole squad will now have been rewarded for their efforts in the historic campaign, with Greaves and Howard the only surviving members yet to be commended.
Ex-Tottenham, Chelsea, West Ham and AC Milan striker Greaves actually played in all three of England's group games in that tournament, as well as the first knockout round, before he was replaced by Geoff Hurst due to injury.
Greaves had returned to fitness in time for the final against West Germany, but Hurst kept his place and went on to score a famous hat-trick.
He was not even given a medal for the triumph until 2009 following another campaign, with only the 11 players who finished the final receiving one originally, but Greaves's has since been sold at auction.
Greaves still holds the record as Tottenham's all-time record goalscorer with 266 goals in 379 appearances, having retired in 1980.
Following his playing career, he moved into broadcasting, working on a number of football-related programmes, including Saint and Greavsie - a popular show he presented alongside ex-Liverpool striker Ian St. John - as well as Sporting Triangles.
Sadly Greaves has since been battling ill-health for many years following a stroke in 2015.
The winning Three Lions team of '66 lost two more members earlier this year, following the deaths of Jack Charlton and Nobby Stiles.
Of that playing squad, only Hurst and Bobby Charlton have been knighted, with the other members earning a mix of OBEs, MBEs and CBEs.
