England hit by UEFA Euro 2020 'tournament too early' jibe as former Scotland keeper throws down Wembley gauntlet

Euro 2020 may have arrived a year late - but Alan Rough reckons it's still too early for England's so-called Golden Generation.

The former Scotland keeper reckons Steve Clarke 's side are heading to Wembley at just the right time and can take advantage of the huge pressure on Gareth Southgate's players.

Rough played against the Auld Enemy seven times in a 53-cap international career - winning at Wembley in 1977 and ’81 - and knows exactly the burden that comes with the fixture.

Expectation south of the border is at fever pitch with stars including Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Jack Grealish and Phil Foden carrying the hopes of the English nation.

But Rough reckons most of Southgate’s side have still to prove themselves.

He said: “ England have good players and we know they’ve got good players.

“But I think this is a tournament too early for England. There’s a lot of young players will come through this and be better in the tournaments ahead.

“We’ve maybe got them at the right time when these young players have still to prove themselves in an England jersey.

“Okay they have Harry Kane. But there’s a lot of young ones in there who will feel the pressure and everything that’s heaped on them in this tournament.

“You saw what Kane did out of nothing at Hampden the last time. Sterling worries me when he is on his game and running at people.

“The rest have still to prove themselves.

“Even when they won 1-0 on Sunday there were a lot of England supporters not happy until they scored.

“They have still to convince a lot of their own fans too.”

Rough has pinpointed John McGinn as a key man for Scotland - and hopes to see Billy Gilmour given his big chance.

And the former Partick Thistle, Hibs and Celtic keeper reckons Clarke’s troops can become legends by grabbing a result to kick-start their Euro 2020 dream.

He told PLZ Soccer : “John McGinn is the buzzbomb, giving the opposition problems.

“He is one who can trouble England and a lot of these players have been to Wembley before which is a big, big thing.

“They know the players they are up against, they have played against them and some are in the same team. They know their strengths and weaknesses.

“They have match winners but so have we. We have got to take our chances, strike first and the confidence will grow.

“It’s the biggest game on the calendar for the Tartan Army. We just have to get something to take into the last game and hang onto.

“I’ve been there myself, against the odds and won. Others have gone down there to Wembley against the odds and won. It can happen.”
