England hero names Liverpool defender who Gareth Southgate must name in World Cup squad

Gareth Southgate has been told he must stop overlooking England's 'best centre-half' - Liverpool's Joe Gomez.

Gomez hasn't had much of an international career due to picking up serious injuries and has just 11 caps to his name. He missed out on the latest England squad and a place in Gareth Southgate's squad for the winter World Cup is looking unlikely at the moment.

But former Tottenham Hotspur star Chris Waddle believes Gomez is the best central defender England have and has urged Southgate to take the Liverpool No.2 to Qatar.

The Three Lions are currently winless in six matches and will go into the World Cup with their manager under immense pressure to turn fortunes around - and answer questions over his squad selections.

Southgate still named Harry Maguire in his teams to face Italy and then Germany over the last week despite being out of favour at Manchester United. And Waddle, who won 62 caps for England was part of the squad that reached the semi-finals in the 1990 World Cup, told compare.bet : “Why is Joe Gomez not in the squad? I just don’t get it.

“He’s probably our best centre-half in England I think. He’s played most games for Liverpool this season... if he’s fit, he’s got to be on the plane, and he’s got to start, there’s no doubt about that in my mind."
