England head coach Eddie Jones agrees to take pay cut in excess of 25 per cent as RFU reduce costs

Eddie Jones has agreed to take a pay cut of more than 25% as English rugby looks to navigate its coronavirus crisis.

On Wednesday the RFU announced that it expected revenue losses of between £45m and £50m over the next 18 months, and said that its executive team would be taking a pay cut of at least 25% to mitigate this.

They also announced a £7m support package for community clubs, whose season was ended prematurely by Covid-19.

England Head Coach Jones was also asked to take a cut, which he agreed to, to his salary, which is reported to be worth £750,000 per year.

“Eddie is overseas at present and when I contacted him regarding our Executive pay reduction proposals he immediately agreed,” said RFU CEO Bill Sweeney.

The governing body is in consultation with Jones’s coaching staff about three-month reductions to their salaries.

England’s next engagement is supposed to be against Japan in July, but that two-Test tour looks increasingly likely to be called off.
