England fans paint St George's Cross on Bristol mini roundabout as Euro 2020 final looms

A mini roundabout in Bristol has been given an "epic" Euro 2020 makeover.

Two mystery England fans were caught on camera painting the St George's Cross in Bishopsworth, in the centre of the Church Road roundabout.

Wearing dark clothing and face coverings, they were seen yesterday afternoon (Saturday, July 10) with paint rollers in hand.

Despite doubts they had permission to paint the road, they have been labelled "heroes" on social media.

Jason Frost-Griffiths spotted the unlikely scene from the car, just as the pair were finishing up.

He told Bristol Live: "I’m sure the council wouldn’t be too happy, but the pride and joy that the football team have restored to the entire country is amazing.

"There is such a feel good factor at the moment - it’s definitely what we needed as a nation after the last 18 months.

"We have recently seen a Pride flag painted in Bristol, which I love, so personally I also think this is amazing to celebrate the pride in our nation."

Jason, who grew up in Bishopsworth but now lives in Whitchurch, posted a photo of the pair on Facebook with the caption: "IT'S COMING HOME."

It has since been shared almost 1,000 times.

"Who are these heroes?" commented one person, while another added: "Epic work lads."

Another person said they had spotted a similar painted roundabout along Four Acres in Withywood.

When Bristol Live visited this morning (Sunday), there was a trail of red and white tyre tracks where vehicles had crossed the roundabout, just next to the Campus Pool indoor skate park.

Nearby along Church Road, a wall had been painted with St George's Cross bunting and a huge red and white heart also in the shape of a cross.

Flags were proudly fluttering from windows of many houses and there were also people driving along with flags fixed to their cars as football fever sweeps through the nation.

Several other mini roundabouts have been painted in a similar fashion elsewhere in the country, including in Berkshire and Cheshire.

In the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, the council painted over the roundabouts "for safety reasons and the possibility of motorists being distracted".

Bristol City Council, the highways authority responsible for most of the city's public roads, has been approached for comment.

England will face Italy from 8pm at Wembley tonight, in what will be the national team's biggest match in 55 years.
