England explain why Rhys Williams has returned to Liverpool

England under-21 manager Aidy Boothroyd confirmed Liverpool defender Rhys Williams was sent home from international duty as a precaution on Tuesday.

Williams was not in the squad to face Albania in Wolverhampton but is set to be fit for Jurgen Klopp ahead of the visit of Leicester City on Sunday.

"He had a very minor stiff hip," Boothroyd said. "It was in his best interests to get him back to Liverpool

"With all the players, if there’s any potential injuries or niggles then our medical staff is in contact with the club.

"Rhys wasn’t actually on the bench so I thought the best thing was to get him back to Liverpool."

Klopp is without Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez in the long-term meaning Williams and Nathaniel Phillips will compete for a starting role alongside Joel Matip in the coming weeks.

Phillips, however, was not registered by Liverpool for their Champions League group stage squad as they believed he would leave the club in the summer transfer window.

Atalanta visit Anfield next Wednesday with Williams in-line to start his second consecutive European clash.
