England star Sam Curran has been ruled out of the upcoming T20 World Cup after suffering an injury while playing in the IPL.
Curran has been featuring for the Chennai Super Kings in the rescheduled tournament and picked up a back injury in their recent defeat to the Rajasthan Royals.
As a result, the 23-year-old has been withdrawn from England's World Cup squad and replaced by older brother Tom Curran, who was one of England's three reserve players.
Left-arm seamer Reece Topley, who was part of England's 2016 T20 World Cup side, has been called up as an additional reserve player.
A statement from the ECB reads: "Surrey and England all-rounder Sam Curran has been ruled out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup with a lower back injury.
"Curran complained of back pain after Chennai Super Kings Indian Premier League fixture on Saturday against Rajasthan Royals. Results of the scan revealed the injury.
"He will fly back to the UK in the next couple of days and will have further scans and a full review later this week from the ECB’s medical team."
The members of England's World Cup squad who are not currently at the IPL flew out to Oman on Monday and have now arrived at their training base in Muscat.
The squad will remain in Oman until October 16 after completing a mandatory quarantine period, before heading to their tournament base in Dubai next Saturday.
England's campaign is due to get underway on October 23, when they face the West Indies at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
They also share a group with Australia and South Africa and will play two warm-up games on October 18 and 20 against India and New Zealand.
England are hoping to win the tournament for the second time, after Paul Collingwood's side lifted the trophy in 2010.
