England cricket hero Darren Gough bitten by a Scorpion in South Africa

Former England cricketer Darren Gough has revealed he was warned he'd be dead on arrival at hospital after being bitten by a scorpion in South Africa.

The former Strictly Come Dancing champ was on safari when he felt something sting him while in bed with his wife Anna.

He hit the creepy-crawly with his phone but it escaped - so was unsure which type of scorpion had got him.

Ex-cricketer Goughie, 47, said on his Talksport radio show: "I was told that as we didn't know which type of scorpion it was, you couldn't tell if it was the fatal sort or not.

"We were too far from a hospital for treatment even if they scrambled a helicopter it would take 40 minutes to reach us - I would be dead on arrival.

"So I just sat there and waited - the missus just turned over and went back to sleep.

"I had hit the scorpion with my phone, but it was on the bed so it did it no harm - it must have just been like a giant trampoline for the bug.

"I spent 30-minutes looking for it, but didn't see it again. Luckily it was the non-fatal type. I can still feel the lump where it got me more than a week later."

Co-host Adrian Durham joked that its a shame it wasn't a snake that bit him.

Gough played as a fast bowler for Yorkshire and Essex during a first-class career which lasted almost 20 years before his retirement in 2008.

He also played in 58 Tests for England after making his debut against New Zealand in 1994.

He famously had a fling with TOWIE's Amy Childs after appearing on The Jump together.

He reunited with his wife in 2016 after a reconciliation.
