England Cricket captain Eoin Morgan: Big win over India was vital to World Cup hopes

Eoin Morgan believes the emphatic manner of England’s 31-run win over India at Edgbaston will serve them well in Wednesday’s crucial meeting with New Zealand.

Victory in their final pool match will guarantee a first semi-final since 1992 but defeat by the Kiwis, who have lost their last two matches and are not guaranteed a semi-final berth themselves, would leave England’s fate in the hands of others.

“The closer we can get to playing our A-game, the more of a chance we have of going the whole way,” said Morgan. “If we’re scraping along, not playing the type of cricket we played in the last four years, I wouldn’t be as confident. Having played the way we did is very encouraging for us.”

England have no concerns over the arm injury that prevented Jason Roy from fielding. Roy was struck by a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah and said: “It was very sore, Bumrah has some pace and hit me quite hard. It needs ice and rest, it’s nothing too sinister.”
