England confirm World Cup shirt numbers as Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham stars report for duty

England's 26-man squad have been assigned their World Cup squad numbers with the tournament set to kick off on Sunday, November 20.

The Three Lions will face Iran in their tournament opener on Monday, November 21, giving Gareth Southgate just days to prepare his squad for their first group stage clash. Arsenal trio Bukayo Saka, Aaron Ramsdale and Ben White were all included in the squad, whilst Tottenham star striker Harry Kane will captain England for the tournament in Qatar.

Southgate will be hoping he can lead his side to go one better than their final appearance at the Euros last summer. Prior to that they had reached the last four of the World Cup in Russia and are among the favourites to lift the iconic trophy in Qatar.

Squad numbers can sometimes provide clues as to who is favoured by the manager and who might start the tournament opener. Southgate may not admit that this is the case, but in the final of the Euros against Italy last summer, eight of the starting XI had a conventional 1 - 11 number on their back.

Jordan Pickford, who has been England's first choice in the past two tournaments, is handed the No.1 shirt and is expected to start ahead Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale. There continues to be a debate around who starts at right-back, with White performing well for the Gunners although he has been handed the No.21 jersey which indicates he may not start for Southgate's side.

England captain Kane will wear the historic No.9 jersey and is one of the first names on the teamsheet, whilst Chelsea star Raheem Sterling has been given the No.10 shirt. Elsewhere, Eric Dier has been given the No.15, Saka has been handed the No.17, Mason Mount will wear the No.19 shirt and his Chelsea teammate Conor Gallagher will don the No.26 jersey as the final player to be assigned a shirt number.

The World Cup squad met on Monday at the St George's Park base ahead of their flight to the Middle East. The full list of England's World Cup squad numbers is below:
