England confirm squad for Third Test as Jofra Archer returns after coronavirus breach

England recalled Jofra Archer to a 14-man squad that keeps their options open for the deciding Test of a fine series against the West Indies at Old Trafford on Friday.

Archer missed the Second Test after revealing to a member of staff that he had broken the biosecurity rules in place for the series by going home to Hove on the way from Southampton to Manchester.

Archer had to spend five days in isolation, was fined £15,000, and was given a written warning. On Wednesday he revealed in his Daily Mail column that he was not sure he would be mentally ready to play in the Third Test.

But after he apologised to his team-mates and performed strongly in training on Wednesday and Thursday, England have chosen to bring him into the congested selection picture.

In his absence, Stuart Broad (six wickets), Chris Woakes (five) and Sam Curran (three) all performed steadily, and retain their places in the squad. Curran only played the Second Test because Archer was stood down.

James Anderson, on his home ground, and Mark Wood also return after being rested.

England will not name their XI until the toss tomorrow morning but it seems possible that Anderson, Broad and Archer make up the specialist seam attack.

It is unlikely but possible that England could leave out Dom Bess and play five seam bowlers. Ben Stokes is not expected to be asked to shoulder such a bowling burden at the end of a series in which he has performed remarkably, taking nine wickets at 16 and scoring 343 runs at 114.33.

England squad: Joe Root (Yorkshire) Captain, James Anderson (Lancashire), Jofra Archer (Sussex), Dominic Bess (Somerset), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Rory Burns (Surrey), Jos Buttler (Lancashire), Zak Crawley (Kent), Sam Curran (Surrey), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Dom Sibley (Warwickshire), Ben Stokes (Durham), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire), Mark Wood (Durham).
