England confirm Japan return in 2020 for two-match Test series against the Rugby World Cup hosts

England will return to Japan for a two-Test series against the Rugby World Cup hosts next July, the RFU have confirmed.

The first match is on July 4 in Oita, with Kobe hosting the second Test seven days later.

Runners-up England visited both cities during the recent World Cup, beating Australia in the quarter-finals at Oita Stadium and defeating the United States in a Pool C contest at Kobe Misaki Stadium.

Current England and former Japan head coach Eddie Jones said: “Japan were fantastic World Cup hosts and we feel humbled to have been a part of it.

"Japan showed how good a side they are with their performances during the World Cup and they will provide a great test for us in July.”

That first match in Oita will be only the third-ever meeting between England and Japan in senior men's international rugby union.

The Brave Blossoms - who embarked on a memorable run to the World Cup quarter-finals on home soil last month - lost 60-7 in the group phase of the 1987 tournament but led 15-10 at half-time on their first visit to Twickenham in the autumn internationals in November 2018 thanks to tries from Ryoto Nakamura and captain Michael Leitch.

However, England eventually prevailed 35-15 after a spirited second-half fightback.
