England coach gives brutally honest assessment of first-half performance against Croatia

  • England's assistant coach, Anthony Barry, described the team's first-half performance against Croatia in Dallas as "complicated and confusing" in an interview with ITV, citing nervous energy and poor decision-making.
  • Harry Kane gave England the lead twice in the first half, scoring from a re-taken penalty and then with a header, but Croatia managed to equalise on both occasions.
  • Barry, who is also Thomas Tuchel's assistant, noted that England's play lacked fluidity, with players making incorrect choices regarding passing length and falling into "fearful patterns" even after scoring.
  • He expressed disappointment that the team conceded a second equaliser after taking the lead, indicating a need for discussion at half-time.
  • Whatever was said at half-time appeared to work, as Jude Bellingham scored within minutes of the restart, before Marcus Rashford netted England’s fourth goal.
