England captain Harry Kane pushing to start Wales showdown despite Alan Shearer plea

Harry Kane is desperate not to be rested as he chases down the England goal record.

Former England striker Alan Shearer has even claimed Kane needs a break to recharge his batteries after his injury scare last week. But the Tottenham talisman - who is two goals short of equalling Wayne Rooney ’s England record - is determined to play against Wales in the final World Cup group match on Tuesday.

England boss Gareth Southgate will resist wholesale changes even though his side are guaranteed a place in the knockout stage as long as they do not suffer a four-goal defeat by Wales. But even if he does make a couple of alterations - with a big public clamour for Phil Foden to get his chance - Kane is almost certain to keep his place.

Kane struggled in the first half against United States and Southgate admitted he felt some discomfort in the foot injury suffered against Iran. But the 29-year-old was better in the second half and is adamant that there is no injury issue.

Kane is also confident England can handle the backlash from the dismal draw with United States and says it brings back memories of the Euros last year. England edged their opening match with Croatia and were held by Scotland but then ended up going all the way to the final, and Kane says it can be similar this time.

He told the BBC : "I think the team are pretty used to it [the noise]. We go from a 6-2 win and everyone is talking about us winning the tournament and then we have not a bad result, a 0-0 versus the USA, and people of course have their opinions. That is part and parcel of major tournament football.

"When we look back at the Euros, it is very similar. After we drew against Scotland, there was a lot of noise after that game. But we are focused on ourselves, we know what it takes to get to a major championship final. And hopefully it will be more of the same if we stay focused on what we need to do.”

England were highly uninspiring during their goalless stalemate with the Stars and Stripes and were booed off by their own fans at the full-time whistle. Marcus Rashford addressed the press on Sunday and urged Three Lions supporters to throw their weight behind the team.

"I feel like if we play well in the next game, that USA game will be forgotten," the Manchester United forward said. "It's not a nice feeling but, to be honest, we don't need fans to boo us to know we have not played well. It was a feeling that was mutual among the group - that we could have done better."
