England captain Harry Kane hails ‘perfect afternoon’ after ending Euro 2020 goal drought against Germany

Harry Kane described ending his goal drought as an “amazing feeling” after scoring against Germany to seal England a spot in the Euro 2020 quarter-finals.

Kane failed to score in three group stage matches and looked set to draw another blank before he found the net in the 86th minute to give England a 2-0 win at Wembley.

The Tottenham striker has been criticised for his poor form at Euro 2020 and said getting on the scoresheet was “massive” on what he described a “perfect afternoon”.

Kane told the BBC: “I have always said as a striker you have just got to be ready for the next chance, ready for the next one.

“Jack [Grealish] has put in a great cross and I was able to put it in. Amazing feeling.

“Any striker wants to be scoring goals so it is nice to get my first goal at this tournament and hopefully I can get a couple more before the end.

“Amazing day, amazing game. To hear Wembley like this is a moment none of us will ever forget. A great performance, 2-0, another clean sheet, just the perfect afternoon.

“We will enjoy this one but we know we have got another big one on Saturday now.

England will face either Sweden or Ukraine in the quarter-finals in Rome on Saturday and Kane has warned they must guard against complacency.

“This will give us more self-belief now moving forward,” he said.

“It does not get no bigger than this. A knockout game against a big nation, at home when the pressure is on and we delivered.

“But we have got to make sure we get it right on Saturday as well now. We cannot switch off. We want to go all the way and will have a tough game coming up.”
