England call up Ben White to Euro 2020 squad as Trent Alexander-Arnold replacement

England have called up Ben White to their Euro 2020 squad as a replacement for the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The 23-year-old won his first cap for the Three Lions in the win over Austria last Wednesday, replacing Jack Grealish, before making his first start on Sunday as Romania were beaten 1-0.

White played as both a centre-back and in a holding midfield role across the two friendlies, impressing manager Gareth Southgate.

More attacking players, such as James Ward-Prowse and Jesse Lingard, were thought of as other candidates to replace Alexander-Arnold, but it is Brighton’s White who has got the nod.

A statement read: “Having made his England debut against Austria in Middlesbrough last Wednesday, White further impressed on his first start for the Three Lions as he played the duration of Sunday’s win against Romania back at the Riverside Stadium.

“It is just reward for the Dorset-born defender who capped his first full campaign in the Premier League by being named Brighton’s Men’s Player of the Season over the weekend.

“Gareth Southgate’s squad will continue their tournament preparation at St. George’s Park this week ahead of the Group D opener against Croatia at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.”

He has been handed the no22 shirt for England.
