England bowler Jofra Archer a major doubt for second South Africa Test due to elbow injury

Jofra Archer appears to be a significant injury doubt for England's second Test against South Africa in Cape Town on Friday.

Archer saw his bowling in the nets severely limited on New Year’s Day due to a right elbow injury.

He did bat and field, but England were unsure if he would be able to take a full part in training on the eve of the match.

Archer has picked up 30 wickets in his first seven Test matches, including a third five-wicket haul in the series opener at Centurion, which England lost by 107 runs.

If he was unavailable, Archer would likely be replaced by a spinner, breaking up the all-pace attack England have opted for in their last two Tests.

An injury to Archer would save a tough decision over the selection of James Anderson and Stuart Broad, with Sam Curran almost certain to play after impressing at Centurion.

With Jack Leach among the worst affected by the sickness bug that swept England’s camp, that spinner is likely to be Dom Bess, who was called up as cover but has skipped ahead of Matt Parkinson in the pecking order.

Happily, all 19 members of the expanded squad were able to train on Wednesday, with every player out of quarantine.
