England boss Gareth Southgate's role in Danny Welbeck's Watford transfer

Danny Welbeck has signed for Watford - thanks to a little bit of help from Gareth Southgate.

Former Arsenal striker Welbeck, 28, has moved to Vicarage Road on a three year deal after a long road back to full fitness.

England boss Southgate remains a big fan of Welbeck and the Football Association helped his return by throwing open the doors of St George’s Park to boost his rehabilitation over the summer.

Welbeck has been out since last November after a sickening ankle injury and his biggest worry was his contract running out at Arsenal and then having to get back to full fitness whilst being without a club.

Arsenal also made it clear he could train with them and included him in their build-up to the Europa League final but Southgate and the FA also helped the final stages of his fitness by allowing him to use all of the facilities he needed at the national centre.

Welbeck went to the 2018 World Cup under Southgate and was a hugely popular member of the England squad and he could yet back in the set-up if he plays regularly for Watford .

It is a big coup for Watford as Everton and Newcastle were also interested but the Hornets have also fended off interest from abroad, including Roma.

Welbeck will see it as a chance to relaunch his Premier League career after injuries curtailed his time at Arsenal.

The ex-Manchester United man has won 42 caps for England, yet has sadly become something of a forgotten figure in recent times due to his injury issues.

He will now rival the likes of Troy Deeney, Gerard Deulofeu and Andre Gray for a place up front in the starting 11 for the Hornets, and could represent a real steal if he can reproduce his form of yesteryears.
